Jungian & Archetypal — The Alchemy of Psyche
The Alchemy of Psyche

When we distill lavender at Cloudscape Hill, we subject the plant to heat, steam, and pressure — and what emerges is something more concentrated, more potent, and more essential than what went in. The plant is transformed. Its most vital properties are separated, clarified, and made available in a new form.
Jung called this process alchemy — not merely as a historical curiosity, but as one of the most precise metaphors ever developed for the transformation of the human psyche. The alchemists, he argued, were projecting onto matter what was actually happening within them. Their laboratories were, in a profound sense, psychological.
At Cloudscape Hill, the distillery and the consulting room share the same spirit.
Depth Psychology & Jungian Coaching
Jim holds a Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with a focus on Jungian and Archetypal Studies, and his doctoral research and dissertation specialty is ecotherapy. His Jungian coaching work — offered through the Hilltending framework — guides individuals into dialogue with the unconscious layers of psyche: personal and collective, shadow and Self, inner villain and inner ally.
This is not surface-level coaching. It is depth work — patient, non-linear, and attentive to what psyche is already trying to say.
What Jungian Coaching Can Help You Do
- Develop different ways of knowing and become aware of unconscious content that shapes your life
- Identify the inner "villains" and "allies" on your journey and understand the meaning they hold
- Integrate seemingly opposite aspects of yourself into creative and transformative development
- Understand the past, present, and future — personal and collective — as a cohesive whole
- Make decisions more aligned with your authentic Self
- Navigate life transitions with greater clarity and groundedness
- Find balance between the rational/intellectual and the emotional/intuitive dimensions of life
- Develop an ongoing relationship with your deeper Self — one that continues long after our work together ends
Practices & Approaches
The Hilltending process is fluid and does not force psyche into a predetermined sequence. Depending on what arises, our work together might engage:
- Dreamwork
- Active imagination
- Personality type and function stack development
- Synchronicity and the new sciences
- Archetypal and symbolic exploration
- Spiritual dimensions of psyche
The Lavender Thread
Lavender has its own archetypal resonance — a plant long associated with purification, clarity, and the liminal space between waking and sleep, between the conscious and the unconscious. At Cloudscape Hill, we grow it, distill it, and work with it daily. Its presence in our fields and our products is not incidental to the psychological work we do here. It is part of the same alchemical process — the transformation of what is raw and wild into something clarified, healing, and whole.
"I highly recommend Dr. James Liter for teaching professionals how to integrate depth psychological and ecotherapeutic concepts, and the themes they engender, with their clinical work."
